A country in danger of sliding into serious turmoil

The problems confronting Yemen are immediate, interconnected and deep-rooted. An unsustainable oil-based economy mired in corruption, a water supply in worryingly fast decline, widespread poverty and frequent violent unrest combine to place the country in a fragile balance, in danger of sliding into serious turmoil. Restive tribes, a northern Houthi rebellion, a southern secessionist movement and growing radicalisation render the national security situation regionally and globally significant. Nothing short of serious change will be able to even begin to address these issues, and as yet, the prospect of such reforms remains distant.
