The Israeli army has suspended a military officer who hit a Danish activist in the face with his gun during a bicycle ride in the Jordan Valley near Jericho on Sunday.

Footage posted on YouTube show Lieutenant Colonel Shalom Eisner suddenly smashing his M-16 rifle into the face of the demonstrator in what seems to be an unprovoked attack.
"Such behaviour is not characteristic of the soldiers and commanders of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement . "It has no place in the IDF and the State of Israel."
