Veteran Saudi Foreign Minister leaves hospital after surgery

Veteran Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal has been discharged from hospital after an operation early last month but must convalesce further at home, state media reported on Friday.

The official SPA news agency gave no date for when the 72-year-old prince, who has been foreign minister for more than 35 years, might be able to resume his duties.

The royal court announced on August 11 that Saud had undergone surgery to remove an obstruction in his intestines.

It said his condition was stable, but reports later surfaced that he had died after the operation, prompting a denial from foreign ministry.

On September 2, SPA published a photograph of the prince being visited in hospital by fellow Gulf foreign ministers.

He was shown seated and looking frail, dressed in traditional thawb Arabian dress and wearing sports shoes.

Prince Saud is one of the world's longest-serving foreign ministers, having been appointed in 1975, seven months after the assassination of his father, king Faisal.

He has suffered from back problems over the years and has undergone surgery in the United States.
