US would welcome move by Syria to give up chemical arms

The United States said Monday it would welcome any plan for Syria to give up its chemical weapons, but said its past record gave little confidence it would agree to do so.

Tony Blinken, a deputy national security advisor, said Washington would take a "hard look" at the Russian plan, which he said only emerged due to US threats of force against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
