Syrian peace envoy Annan to visit Tehran next week

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan will not visit Tehran next week, his spokesman said Wednesday, after Iran's foreign minister said the ex-UN chief was expected in the Iranian capital.

"He is not going to Iran next Monday or next week," the envoy's spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told AFP. Instead, Annan will be briefing the UN Security Council through video conferencing from Geneva on Monday.

Earlier Wednesday, Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Annan was "probably coming to Tehran on Monday."

Iran is Syria's chief ally in the Middle East, and has provided the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with political and material support as it cracks down on an uprising.

Assad has reportedly accepted a six-point plan put forward by Annan that calls for an end to the violence in the strife-hit state.

However, activists said Syrian forces backed by tanks stormed the central town of Qalaat al-Madiq and nearby villages on Wednesday, killing at least 13 people.
