The tweet has received more than 3000 RTs and almost 1,000 likes. The office of the Iranian President has not denied that the account, which currently has close to 28,000 followers, in fact belongs to Rouhani.

Rouhani wishing “all Jews” a Happy New Year is a huge shift in rhetoric from Tehran after eight years of anti-Israeli rhetoric from former President Ahmadinejad. During the election campaign Rouhani described Ahmadinejad’s approach against Jews as “hate rhetoric.”

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, began on Wednesday and brought the American President Obama, who wished “Shanah Tovah” from a Swedish synagogue, and the Iranian President together in a rare unity.
