Israel refuses to hand over body of man behind car attack

Banner Icon The family of a Palestinian behind a deadly attack accepted Israel's terms for his funeral on Sunday, sources on both sides said, after disagreements threatened to delay the ceremony.

The family of Abdelrahman Shaludi, who killed two people when he rammed his car into an Israeli crowd on Wednesday before being shot dead, agreed to accept his body and hold the funeral after Israel raised the number of participants from 20 to 70, said Jawad Siyyam, who runs a local information centre.

Israeli authorities had threatened to bury the body themselves unless an agreement was reached, according to Siyyam, an activist from east Jerusalem's Silwan neighbourhood where the Shaludi family resides.

Police also said the family had accepted but they denied having increased the limit on the number allowed to attend the funeral, a measure imposed to prevent disturbances.
