France's Hollande to visit Beirut on Sunday

French President Francois Hollande will visit Beirut on Sunday for talks with his Lebanese counterpart Michel Sleiman, a high-ranking official in the Lebanese president's office told AFP.

"President Hollande will visit Beirut for a few hours on Sunday for talks with President Sleiman," the official said, explaining that they will have breakfast together and then hold a press conference."

Hollande's trip will be the first by a French president since the previous head of state, Nicolas Sarkozy, visited in June 2008.

It comes days after Lebanon's opposition called on Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign, accusing the government of complicity with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The resignation call came after a massive car bomb in central Beirut killed three people in October, including top security official Wissam al-Hassan, in an attack the opposition blamed on Syria and its allies in Lebanon.
