Calm restored after Sinai peacekeeping base attack

The Egyptian army restored control after a group of Bedouin stormed an international peacekeepers' camp in the Sinai to protest against an Internet video mocking Islam, sources said.

The Bedouin broke through the fence of the Multinational Force and Observers compound earlier and set fire to an observation tower. In the ensuing clashes, two Colombians and an Egyptian were injured, a security official said, adding that the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

The protesters also set fire to a car inside the compound in the town of Al-Goura, which lies around 10 kilometres (six miles) from the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel.

According to the official MENA news agency, the Egyptian army managed to regain control of the situation late in the evening "and calm was restored to the area."

The peacekeeping mission, which has contingents from 12 countries including the United States, is tasked with monitoring a 1979 peace treaty with neighbouring Israel.

The breach comes as fresh clashes erupted near the US embassy in Cairo over the low-budget film that portrays Muslims as immoral and gratuitously violent.

One protester was killed and 53 police officers injured in the violence, according to security sources.

The controversial film pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of paedophilia and homosexuality, while showing him sleeping with women and talking about killing children.
