Annan fears torture violations intensifying in Syria

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan on Tuesday expressed fears that torture, mass arrests and other human rights violations are "intensifying" in Syria, UN diplomats said.

Annan told the UN Security Council that people in Syria known for advocating non-violence in the country's unrest have been arrested by President Bashar al-Assad's government, according to diplomats at a closed briefing given by Annan.
