PHOTOS: Erbil shows off its colour in support of Peshmerga fighters

Banner Icon This Wednesday Kurdistan celebrated its National Flag Day. Most people wore traditional dresses and military attire in solidarity with the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters. Dilan Raphiann checked out the celebrations in Erbil.

Kurdistan’s National Flag Day was established by the Kurdistan Regional Government in 1999. The day is marked in schools and offices across the Kurdish region of Iraq by celebrating the Kurdish flag and Kurdish national dress. Traditional clothes for women come in various styles and can even determine where someone is from. The full outfit is a collection of many pieces worn together, which sometimes results in quite a hefty price tag.

The national anthem is sung, Kurdish clothes are worn and flags are paraded around town. This year, in solidarity with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces fighting the Islamic State, the city of Erbil was full of people in military attire and national dresses.
